Will an Anti-Bullying Law Bankrupt Your School?
It’s happening all across America. Here’s how to protect your school
Could this happen to you?
Parents in Anchorage, Alaska, were awarded $4.5 million dollars in a lawsuit because the school’s anti-bullying efforts failed to stop their son from being bullied. To end his misery, the boytried to kill himself and suffered irreparable brain damage as a result. In other lawsuits throughout the country, parents are winning judgments of hundreds of thousands of dollars because their kids were bullied in schools.
“Society is attacking the wrong problem,” warns bullying expert, Izzy Kalman. “And these good intentions can lead to disaster if anti-bullying crusaders have their way.” Izzy Kalman' book, "Bullies to Buddies: How to turn your enemies into friends!" is an honored recipient of an iPareting Media Award.
Anti-bullying policies don’t help
In fact, in many cases they only make the problem worse. Research shows that anti-bullying programs can actually lead to an increase in bullying. The added fact that having anti-bullying policies and programs in place heightens parents’ expectations—and anger—if those efforts fail to protect their child, makes for a dangerous mix.
Parents can then use anti-bullying laws to sue schools for failing to stop their children from being bullied. Bullying goes on in virtually every classroom in every school. As more parents and lawyers get wind of the right to sue schools, every school in America will be in danger of bankruptcy.
What you can do to protect your school
Kalman, MS, NCSP, is a nationally renowned author and expert on bullying and anger control. His simple yet innovative methods are now detailed in his new book for kids ages 10 and up, Bullies to Buddies: How to Turn Your Enemies into Friends! (©2004, $15.00 pb, www.bullies2buddies.com).
The problem is not bullying, says Kalman. Bullying goes on whenever people live, work, or study together. The problem is the “victim mentality,” the often overlooked flip-side of bullying. Anti-bullying programs unwittingly encourage this victim mentality. Ultimately, the only reliable way to reduce bullying is to teach people--especially our kids--to how to stop thinking like victims.
Also a school psychologist and psychotherapist, Kalman has been tackling this problem for nearly 25 years. In contrast to most anti-bullying approaches, Kalman teaches kids how to solve their own problems without anyone’s help and without getting anyone in trouble.
See how your audience—parents, teachers, and kids—can learn to handle:
• Name-calling
• Physical attacks
• Rumors
• Exclusion from cliques
• Racial insults
• Insults about disabilities
• Internet bullying
• Tough parents / teachers
• Mean brothers / sisters
