Entertainment Industry Unfairly Blamed for Violence

Violence in New York City is at its lowest since the 60’s, according to a recent New York Times investigative report (“New York Killers, and Those Killed, by the Numbers”, Jo Craven McGinty, New York Times, 4.28.06). Why? It is taken as a matter of faith by the social sciences that violent entertainment causes violence in real life, and violence in entertainment is at an all time high. So why do violence statistics continue to go down as violent entertainment goes up?

Izzy Kalman, a Nationally Certified School Psychologist from New York City and maverick expert in bullying, has been claiming for years that the entertainment industry is being unfairly blamed for violence in society. In general, Kalman claims, there is an inverse relationship between violence in entertainment and violence in real life. Most people who live with true violence in their daily lives do not want to watch it on the screen.

People love to complain about the dangers of violent entertainment, but would hate to actually get rid of it. What are we going to watch? Good things happening to people? People being polite to each other? That’s not entertaining; that’s boring. It would make us depressed, as we wonder “When is it going to be my turn to have something good happen?” Kalman says most people love shows with a happy ending. But we only want the ending to be happy. The rest of the story has to be full of misery.

Social scientists have had a dismal record in solving social problems, so it is convenient to blame them on entertainment. Kalman says that divorce does far more damage to children than any other social factor, but the social sciences have failed to stem the tide of divorce. Most couples who go for marriage counseling end up divorced. The divorce rate among mental health professionals is probably even higher than among the general population. Kalman asks, “If the relationship experts don’t even know how to get along with their own spouses, how are they going to teach others to live in peace?”

Kalman, author of Bullies to Buddies: How to turn your enemies into friends!, regularly presents his unconventional views in a monthly email newsletter and conducts his own research surveys to explain the mysteries of social problems. A recent survey-based article explained why food and sex in entertainment are far more dangerous to society than violence in entertainment
