Experts Praise Unconventional School Bullying Program
“Thanks for bringing this bold and timely method to audiences. This ideology is overdue!” declares Michael S. Trieger, an Illinois psychologist. Cindy Owings, a counselor in Nevada says, “It is a radical and perfectly logical method. I’m anxious to try it out. Lord knows what we’ve done so far hasn’t been very effective.” “I wish there would be a broad public presentation of this material – like in schools, on Public TV,” states Mary Jo Wimbish, an Oklahoma social worker. “This could bring true peace to the world if everyone applied this with every person they encounter,” asserts Sally West, a Mississippi marriage and family therapist.
What are they talking about? An unconventional approach to bullying. Izzy Kalman, a Nationally Certified School Psychologist from New York City, has taught thousands of professionals at his seminars a different way of understanding and dealing with bullying. Kalman says that there is actually nothing new about his approach; it teaches universal wisdom and basic psychological truths. “Excellent seminar presentation,” writes Jayashri Wyatt, a school administrator from northern California. “The material is a resurrection of Ghandi and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s theories of non-violence. I do worry that in this day and age there will be tremendous resistance to implementing such policies and practices.”
What’s really new is the anti-bully movement and, unfortunately, it is not very effective, says Kalman. Independent research has shown that the popular whole school anti-bullying programs, for the most part, have little or no benefit, and often make the problem worse. Kalman says that the reason for their limited success is that they define the problem in the wrong way. “Everyone thinks that the problem is bullying, so we are trying to target and eradicate bullies. In the process, we become bullies ourselves,” Kalman says. “But bullying is a part of life. You can’t just get rid of it. It’s like trying to eliminate disease by ridding the planet of bacteria and viruses. If victims have to wait for society to get rid of bullying, they may be victims forever.”
Kalman says that bullying goes on in all social organizations, and schools are actually the place where the least amount of bullying goes on. His survey of over a thousand mental health professionals and educators reveal that their own children are several times more likely to be bullied by a sibling at home than by another child in school. If the experts can’t get their own two or three kids at home to stop tormenting each other, how can we expect a teacher to get thirty kids to stop?
What does work? Kalman says that the only reliable and effective way to deal with bullying is to teach people how not to be victims. “If you know how not to be a victim, no one can bully you. Your problem disappears in as little as a few days, and you don’t have to wait for the world to change.” It may sound difficult, but Kalman says that it is absolutely effortless to stop being a victim. All you have to do is know the rules for winning. He claims that his technique, which he teaches to professionals at his seminars, can teach kids as young as five to stop being picked on.
Kalman, author of Bullies to Buddies: How to turn your enemies into friends!, regularly presents his unconventional views in a monthly email newsletter and conducts his own research surveys to explain the mysteries of social problems. A recent survey-based article explained why food and sex in entertainment are far more dangerous to society than violence in entertainment
