Want Healthier Entertainment?
Keep the Violence, Ditch the Food

For decades parents, educators, and mental health professionals have been campaigning against violence in entertainment, fearing it increases real-life violence. Izzy Kalman, a Nationally Certified School Psychologist and expert in bullying, claims we are worrying about the wrong problem. The real danger is not violence in entertainment - it is food.

The U.S. government has recently declared obesity an epidemic. Two out of three Americans are overweight and one out of three is obese. The damage caused by overeating to our health and self-esteem is practically incalculable. But the murder rate in the country is only 5.5 out of 100,000. We are far more likely to be hurt by overeating than by violence.

Kalman’s research sheds light on this observation. He has been conducting surveys of mental health professionals and educators who attend his national seminar, Turning Bullies into Buddies. One survey items is: After watching people enjoying food on TV, I feel an urge to eat. Another is: After watching a violent movie, I feel an urge to injure or kill people.

Of 1174 respondents, 36% answered “Yes” to the item about food. For the item about violence, only 0.8% - less than one per cent! – answered “Yes”.

This means that we are about fifty times more likely to feel an urge to eat after viewing food than to feel an urge for violence after viewing violence. Hundreds of people can sit in a crowded theater watching a violent film and no fights break out. Yet the average person watches several hours of TV per day, sitting passively on the couch, with images of food driving him to the refrigerator during commercials. Is it any wonder we are becoming so fat?

Kalman says that attempts to prove that violent entertainment leads to real life violence are misguided. Violence statistics in the US are lower than ever, while graphic violence on the screen is greater than ever. He says there is a simple reason why food in entertainment is more dangerous than violence. Eating is a positive biological need. If we didn’t eat, we would die, so Mother Nature rewards eating with pleasure. Viewing food therefore stimulates an urge to eat. But violence is a negative biological need. It causes pain and damage. Mother Nature has programmed us to avoid violence unless we feel it is absolutely necessary. Just because we watch it, it doesn’t make us want to do it.

So stop feeling guilty about enjoying violent entertainment. It’s much healthier for you than watching food.
